Vedanta has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with 20 South Korean firms to establish an electronics manufacturing hub for India’s first display manufacturing plant. AvanStrate, a Japan-based LCD manufacturer Vedanta bought in 2017, will be part of the proposed hub. At the time of its acquisition, AvanStrate had a capacity of around 12.5 million m² LCD glass substrates with facilities in Korea and Taiwan. Its Korean plant has been operational for over 15 years and manufactures TFT displays from Gen 4 to Gen 8. The facility also serves as the company’s research and development center, working on developing wafer glass, ultra-thin glass, next-generation cover glass, and AR/VR glass applications.
Vedanta Displays Limited (VDL) plans to set up an integrated display fab business to cater to all display segments, seemingly, leveraging the expertise of AvanStrate, with an initial focus on Gen 8.6 A-Si IPS fabs with a per month capacity of 60,000 sheets and 10 million modules. Vedanta’s long-term vision is to increase monthly production capacity to 240,000 sheets and 40 million modules. The company expects to start trial productions for the back-end fab and front-end in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
