The Eye Tribe Shows Eye Tracking on Phones and TVs

The Eye Tribe showed fruit ninja being played using eye trackingDanish Eye Tracking software company, The Eye Tribe was on the Denmark booth and was showing how its eye-tracking technology could be used in SmartTVs as well as in tablets and smartphones, which it talked about last year. The TV demo showed how content could be selected and controlled using a combination of eye tracking and a simple remote control. Anders Bo Pedersen from the company showed us how the eye tracking technology alone could be used to run a game such as Fruit Ninja. We made a video that you can find below. Pedersen was keen to emphasise that the quality of cameras increasingly included in notebooks as well as tablets and smartphones is good enough for the eye tracking function. There is also a need for a very low cost infrared LED, but again, these are sometimes already included for other uses.

The Eye Tribe has been working with Lego in retail stores in Copenhagen to allow children playing with Lego to interact with tablets, but crucially for Lego, without putting down the bricks. The firm found that if it wants to integrate the bricks and figures with a virtual world, there is a real danger that children picking up a tablet to get information will then leave the physical object alone and get pulled into just playing with the tablet.
