Forth Dimension Displays (ForthDD) (Scotland) is a long time manufacturer of high performance LCOS panels. At I/ITSEC 2014, the company told us that its microdisplays now power over 97% of the US Army’s HMDs used for training, simulation and mission rehearsal.
One application where the 1280 x 1024 resolution microdisplays are used is the US Army’s Flight School XXI program. L-3 Link is the largest supplier of flight simulators to the program, including the L-3 Link Simulation & Training’s Operational Flight Trainers (OFTs) and Reconfigurable Collective Training Devices (RCTDs). These training devices are operating at 99.5% availability and have just surpassed 200,000 hours of aircrew training.
The SXGA microdisplay has been optimized to deliver the best image quality in the most demanding HMD applications where fast moving imagery is displayed across a wide field of view with precise head tracking. ForthDD is now shipping its QXGA resolution (2560 x 1536) panel and is working with customers to upgrade HMDs with the SXGA panel to this new version.
