1.6 Million Viewers for BBC Ultra HD HDR Live Broadcast Trial

The BBC has called its Ultra HD and HDR live streaming trial “a great success” following broadcasts of all the World Cup matches that the BBC held rights to, plus every Centre Court match from the Wimbledon UK tennis tournament.

The broadcaster revealed that 1.6 million viewers watched the content, which was made available through its iPlayer platform. The trial saw peak streams of 60,300 in one day on July 7th, the day of the Sweden vs England World Cup quarter-final and day six of Wimbledon.

The BT.2100 wide colour gamut and the Hybrid Log Gamma HDR format were used during the trial, which saw reports of issues from viewers. The BBC’s Phil Layton commented:

“The trial revealed issues around latency and buffering that were expected. However, it is clear from the feedback that a great number of viewers enjoyed seeing football and tennis in Ultra HD with wide colour gamut and high dynamic range”.
