You Make LCDs and We’ll Buy QD-OLEDs Deal Done at Samsung

What They Say

The ETNews in Korea reports that there has been a change in the policy of the Samsung Electronics VD business towards the QD-OLED technology being developed by Samsung Display (Samsung Visual Display Division Forsakes QD-OLEDs in Favor of MiniLED TVs). The paper reports that the VD business, which makes the Samsung TVs, will adopt the technology and launch sets in 2022. Samsung Display, on the other hand, has agreed to continue supplying LCDs to the VD business. The report said that the agreement was first proposed by Han Jong-Hee, President of the VD Business.

What We Think

This looks like a reasonable solution. VD wouldn’t want to have to completely rely on Chinese LCD suppliers, as this will make it hard to keep the quality up and the prices competitive. On the other hand, without the VD business, which has the biggest TV brand in the world and huge marketing power, QD-OLED would have struggled to build any reasonable volume. (BR)
