What They Say
Yoeri Geutskens has published the latest update to his very useful HDR Ecosystem Tracker. In the article he explained that although Apple said that the iPhone 12 can capture HDR in Dolby Vision, it uses a new version of Dolby Vision described as Profile 8.4. The profile is based on HLG with Dolby Vision dynamic metadata. It also points out that Apple has some compatibility issues with Dolby Vision in its own ecosystem.
What We Think
This is the first time that I have heard of any kind of metadata with HLG. It’s slightly strange as HLG is scene-referred, rather than display-referred, precisely to eliminate the need for metadata. However, I think I can see how metadata might allow a better display of the contents on a TV that only supports the PQ curve, but not HLG itself. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a set that supports PQ, but not HLG, so I’ll have to dig a bit further. (BR)
