According to reports, Apple is developing a new wireless charging technology that looks set to debut on next year’s iPhone 7S. The new technology could allow iPhones and iPads to be charged anywhere in the home or office without being placed on a dedicated mat.

Technologies like this exist already, but rely on other products – such as charging coils built in to furniture, as with the Rezence specification from the AirFuel Alliance. Other types include continuously ‘broadcasting’ low levels of power to trickle-feed products; companies such as uBeam and Ossia take this approach. It remains to be seen whether Apple would take on an existing solution or develop a proprietary method of power transfer. (TA)
