The BBC will offer select games from this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament in Ultra HD and HDR to viewers in the UK via its catch-up TV platform, iPlayer. The news follows a trial during which World Cup matches were streamed in UHD and HDR on the service.
The broadcaster has also revealed it will make some World Cup matches available to Sky Q customers, but only in UHD, not HDR. Explaining the decision, Forbes and Techradar’s John Archer commented:
“The World Cup streams have suffered a few technical teething problems — stuttering and buffering with some devices. [There have also been] a few issues with adapting effectively to broadband speeds that are close to the BBC’s 40 Mbps and 20 Mbps streaming quality tiers”.
Wimbledon 2018 commences on July 2nd.
