There have been reports that Samsung may be looking to acquire a Taiwan-based microLED developer, PlayNitride for around $150 million.
PlayNitride exhibited its PixelLED technology which is for smartwatches and can reach 1,500ppi at LED Taiwan recently. Charles Li of PlayNitride showed a 7mm x 7mm microdisplay based on its LED technology at a Micro Assembly Day in Berlin in 2016 (Image). The LED is claimed to use just 20% of the power of an equivalent LCD.
Analyst Comment
Although this story has been widely reported, all of the reports seem to be based on a single rumour from OLED Info that refers to an ‘industry insider’ in Taiwan, so we would treat this news with caution. (BR)
