What They Say
Ben Schwarz wrote an article for the 8K Association and looked at the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and whether the 4nm technology would enable 8K on smartphones. He said that the chip supports 18 bit image signal processing and supporting 18 bit RAW output as well as 18 stops of dynamic range. The article suggests that the chip could change the current upper limit of 8K24P for recording up to 8K30P, although still short of 60fps. It will also allow support for HDR10+.
What We Think
Hmmm… I have said for a long time that even with the limited viewing that I have done of 8K, it seems that even higher frame rates are needed than for lower spatial resolution. No doubt some consumers will be turned on to buying new smartphones to get the 8K video support. How many will actually see that content is another issue!
(after I wrote that comment, I looked at the specs for the chip and you can see that Qualcomm doesn’t expect much 8K viewing, either and is not supporting it!) (BR)
