Will Apple Watch Switch to MicroLED

Back in September of last year, we covered Eric Viery of Yole, who pronounced, “If everything goes according to plan, we will see Apple’s microLED smart watch in 2024.” So, let’s give credit where credit is due. And so, we get to the here and now of the rumor mill that is Apple fandom.

In a research note for Hong Kong investment firm Haitong International Securities, Pu said a new high-end Apple Watch will likely adopt a larger 2.1-inch micro-LED display measured diagonally, which would allow for increased brightness compared to current Apple Watch models with OLED displays. This model would presumably be a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra, which launched last September and has a 1.92-inch display.

What We Say

Here’s the most interesting thing about the Apple Watch: it’s designed to be used as a sort of persistent aid , wearable on your wrist as you go about doing whatever it is you are doing during your day, and it has all these great features to track your activity that you can get kind of addicted to which means that you want it to be always with you. But, and it is a big but, the damn thing needs to be charged often. I mean, a lot. At least when you consider what it means to you.

Then, you have the fact that if you use it on the go, it is in variable lighting, and the screen is small, and not always bright, and so, you end up turning up the brightness, and that just makes that draining batter more drainable.

So, anything that changes that experience is a good thing. It should be at the top of the list. Over and above that, microLED, which still has to live up to its full potential, should be the go to choice for any portable device, and in that instance, the Apple Watch is probably a higher priority than an Apple smartphone. Or, I just may be a biased Apple Watch user who welcomes anything that cuts the overhead of constantly having to charge my device.
