What They Say
SkyShowtime, the new streaming service from Comcast and ViacomCBS has got approval to start in business in Europe and will launch in 20 countries later this year – mainly the countries that Sky doesn’t currently operate.
What We Think
I met an executive from Sky at an event earlier this week. We had an interesting, although brief, discussion about the Sky Glass. He told me that one of the reasons for developing the set is that Sky was keen to develop a ‘Sports mode’ to optimise image quality for that use case, similar to the FilmMakers’ mode that has been developed. It didn’t get much support, so developed the TV set so that it could put in that kind of optimisation as part of its longer term strategy of trying to ‘push the envelope’ on performance and image quality. The set has optimisations and, using its own service, it can signal to the set.
Separately, HBOMax confirmed that its roll out of the ‘second wave’ of countries will start on March 8th. (BR)
