What They Say
Earlier this week, NEC Display Solutions became a joint venture subsidiary of Sharp and is now Sharp NEC Display Solutions. (Newly Born Sharp NEC Display Solutions Ltd. Starts Business)
What We Think
We caught up with senior management at NEC Display in Europe in a Zoom call, but, as expected, there was not much real news, yet.
-
Because of legal restrictions, there has been no contact at the operational level between the companies until this week, so not much has happened, yet.
-
NEC sees real opportunities to exploit some aspects of Sharp’s technology and products including 8K, IOT and others. However, there have been no discussions about product ranges etc. At the moment, there will be parallel operations with existing products continuing.
-
NEC sees real strength in its customer base in Europe that it will be able to leverage and perhaps exploit with extra products in Europe.
-
The firm has seen a surprisingly resilient market in key verticals such as cinema and airports, rolling out projects that had already been set up although new projects have now started to be scarce. As usual in the project business, there can be a lag in the way the market changes on the way up or down.
-
Monitors and IT products have been doing well and there are lots of new projects in that area for 2021.
-
The second wave of lockdowns has had nothing like the negative impact of the first wave
