What They Say
Hat-tip to Sixteen-Nine.net for pointing us to a US company lobby that uses nine curved and tiled 55″ portrait-oriented OLEDs from LG. The team from AVI-SPL (which is based in the offices in Dallas) worked with Draper to mount the displays and AVI-SPL Engineering Manager Erich Schriefer said:
“It was super interesting and exciting to actually bend the OLED displays on site, under the guidance of on-site LG professionals. There’s a curve table that the display attaches to, then a ratchet you turn, and it bends the display to the precise curve you need. Assistance from Draper and LG was critical to the success of this part of the project.”
There’s also a digital wayfinding screen on a nearby lobby wall, and inside the offices, a ground floor meeting room that has LG’s 136″ LED display.
The firm said that it has already had enquiries about this kind of project because of its visibility.
What We Think
These curved OLEDs are likely to remain a niche, I think. An AV company is a good place to have this kind of display as it should have the understanding to ensure that content is appropriately created and used to avoid image sticking, which is not an issue in TV, but is still likely to be in this kind of installation where high brightness and fixed content are more likely.
