What They Say
An interesting post on a French home cinema website, highlighted by Ultra HD 4K News, points out that the AV1 codec cannot supply dynamic HDR metadata, as the codec relies on Metadata messages in the stream OBU.
The same applies to the older VP9 codec. When that codec is used, dynamic metadata needs to be handled by a separate container.
What We Think
I confess that this information is right on the edge of my understanding of codecs and containers and I only had limited time to dig into the weeds as to whether this information was significant, but I did think it was (probably) significant. If any readers would like to educate me on the topic, I’d be happy to understand it better! Florian Friedrich, whose views I respect on image quality, is very adamant that dynamic metadata is essential for the optimum presentation of HDR. (BR)
