VESA Seeks Input on DSC Revision

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) is examining a refinement to its Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 5). DSC reduces bitrates to enable higher resolution content to be played through existing interfaces and consume less power on mobile devices. The new coding system is being referred to as Advanced DSC (Adv-DSC).

Adv-DSC is aimed at applications that require a lower bits-per-pixel (bpp) bit rate than DSC v1.1, which provides 8bpp. The visually lossless coding quality will be maintained. In exchange for improved compression, Adv-DSC will require more complex encoders and decoders. However, complexity will still be lower than HEVC with Screen Content Coding Extensions.

Input from other standards bodies and potential users of Adv-DSC is now being sought. The feedback should deal with specific applications and requirements for a new coding system. For example, compressed bpp targets; preferred encoder and decoder power limits; target resolution; and information on pixel formats, such as component types, colour space and chroma sampling.

Feedback should be submitted to [email protected] before 30th November. Questions can also be sent to this address, or Dale Stolitzka (task group chairman), at [email protected].

Publication is expected in 2016.
