PMA Research expects that worldwide sales of projectors will rise 25% YoY in 2014. As well as increased sales around the Football World Cup in the summer, home cinema projectors have also become more affordable, with better connectivity and versatility. In mature markets, the window between the initial adoption of flat-panel displays and their replacements – expected within the next few years – is also contributing to buoyant growth.
Full HD projectors have now fallen below $700, driving both first-time and replacement purchases in mature markets. Lower prices for 1280 x 720 models are also attracting first-time buyers in developing regions. It is not only low-cost models that have bene performing well, however. PMA expects sales of ‘step-up’ and high-end UltraHD home theatre models ($10,000+) are expected to show 25% growth over 2013. Despite this sales rise, it is believed that even more demand is being held back by a lack of education about projectors.
Pico and personal projectors are not included in PMA’s data. However, these models are also showing wider use-cases as they are used in mini home theatre and portable business and entertainment applications.
