US Army to Replace LCD Display with OLED in Fighter Pilot Helmet

An eMagin OLED display is to be used to fix an ongoing issue with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter helmet, according to several reports. The $400,000 Kopin helmet currently in use features an LCD microdisplay with an LED backlighting module that emits a green glow, impairing pilots’ visibility of carrier lights at nighttime.

The issue, first reported in 2012, means only very experienced pilots can perform carrier landings at night. Several software updates were deployed but the manufacturer was unable to fix the bug in this way.

While an official announcement hasn’t yet been made, several sources seem to indicate that the display will be swapped out for an eMagin OLED, in order to fix what is proving to be a serious problem.
