PMA Research (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on large displays, has published their latest All-Displays sell-through tracking report on professional large-format flat panel displays (32″ and larger) and professional projectors (above 500 lumens) being sold by leading U.S. Distributors who serve commercial markets.
Two key projector segments saw unit sales increase by more than 50%, coupled with a double-digit drop in the corresponding wholesale prices. There has been an ongoing shift in the 6000+ lumen projector space. In 2019 there was a 55% increase in unit sales of 6000+ lumen laser phosphor projectors, while there was a 35% decrease in unit sales of 6000+ lumen lamp projectors. This shift accompanied +10% price declines in both segments.
Additionally, the 4000-5999 lumen Laser Phosphor projector segment saw many new models with aggressive price points which led to stiff competition and a 51% jump in unit sales for 2019 vs. 2018. Prices also dropped +10% in 2019, though that’s less than the price declines for this segment in 2018.
There were also dramatic price shifts in in large-format (60-inch+) flat panel displays. 75 to 79-inch displays, the fastest growing segment in the flat panel display space, saw prices decline 15% through 2019 as several brands introduced aggressively priced models in this size range. Meanwhile, 80″-89″ FPDs had relatively stable pricing in 2019 but there’s expectation that this is the next segment to see significant price competition
