Unikorn to make microLEDs for Epistar

What They Say

Digitimes reports that Unikorn, a spin-out from Epistar and based in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan that acts as a semiconductor (III-V compound) foundry business, is to make mircroLED panels for its founding company.

Unikorn produces VCSEL, GaN-on-Si power components and other compound semiconductors. The company has annual production capacity of 10,000 4″ and 6″ epitaxial wafers currently. As production of microLED panels entails use of 6″ epitaxy process, Unikorn will become an outsourced producer for Epistar, the sources told the site.

The site said that Epistar has modified 95% of blue-light LED chip production equipment in Taiwan for producing miniLEDs and is looking to make them in China as well.

It also reported that Leyard and Epistar have formed a J/V for miniLED and microLED called Lijin Microelectronics Technology (Jiangsu). Lijin started up at the end of 2020, but is already operating at full capacity.

What We Think

We haven’t reported on Unikorn and Lijin before. Unfortunately, a visit to Touch Taiwan in 2020 wasn’t possible and I suspect it may be 2022 before it becomes possible. (BR)
