UCIe Adds Nvidia, but Still Not Apple

What They Say

We published a pointer to an article about the UCIe chip interface New Chip Interconnect is ‘Incredibly Important’ back in the spring. Notable as missing from the long list of the chip ‘great and good’ were Nvidia and Apple. Now the consortium behind the standard has said that it has added Nvidia as a member as well as Alibaba.

You can request a copy of the specification here.

What We Think

This is good for the specification, Nvidia is important. Apple can, no doubt, survive perfectly well without this technology. If it wanted to really exploit it, I would have expected it to be on the board where it could influence the direction. As the saying has it, wide participation is necessary but not sufficient for the success of a technology development.

Back in the 80s, I bought an MSX home computer made by Yamaha (it had a really good synthesizer built in). The MSX standard was backed by all the majors in Japan and Microsoft. How could it fail? Well, it did! (although I got a good number of years of use out of the music side of it). (BR)
