TVs Pass Blu-Ray Players in Connected Device Popularity

Connected TVs are now the third-most-common device that delivers apps to a TV in the USA, according to The NPD Group. Connected TVs overtook connected Blu-ray players to achieve this spot.

As of Q4’14, there were 22 million connected TVs accessing the internet in the USA – a significant rise from 13 million in Q4’13. Meanwhile, there were 20 million connected Blu-ray players in US homes. Game consoles and streaming media players retained the number one and two spots, however.

Blu-ray player adoption is being limited by consumers’ move from disc to digital, said the NPD Group. Meanwhile, by 2017 it is thought that there will be 47 million connected TVs in 30 million US homes.
