Turn Any Surface Into a Touchscreen

What They Say

An article in the IEEE Spectrum highlights a new method for combining a rolling shutter camera with a scanning projector to allow optical sensing of depth with just a single camera, rather than the multiple cameras that are typically used. The camera and projector are synchronised. The system uses ‘slope disparity gating’ to capture the area only slightly above the projected screen. The team is continuing to work on an auto-calibration process to make set up easier.

As well as the article, a paper is available here.

The system cost $500 as a prototype, but could be a lot cheaper.

What We Think

This kind of technology has been under development for a long time, but has never taken off with real volume. This looks like a potentially low cost option, which might help. (BR)
