Tianma to invest in 8.6-gen panel project

Tianma Fab

What They Say

Tianma announced that it is to proceed with a plan to invest $5.18 billion in a new G8.6 LCD fab in Xiamen, China. The company itself said that it would start construction later this year with production starting and Phase 1 mass production by the second half of 2024. Final capacity will be 120K substrates per month.

What We Think

This is the first time that Tianma has gone above G6. The company is expected to make both a-Si and IGZO-based display substrates at the fab which should allow it to move into more premium IT and automotive markets as its small LTPS business (where it is a strong supplier) comes under further pressure from OLED.
