What They Say
The Korea Herald reports that Samsung may have a strike brewing after a break down between the firm and the four trade unions that it is negotiating with. One of the unions said that there had been 15 rounds of talks and said that Samsung had ‘unilaterally delayed the progress in negotiation in a deceitful manner’.
Unions have demanded substantial bonuses that would amount to 25% of Samsung’s annual profit and a raise of $8,350 for each employee. An offer is said to be on the table for a 7.5% rise, with 4.5% increase in basic pay.
The paper said that Samsung had offered to reward employees with incentives that amount to up to 200% of monthly base salary, while those in memory chip operations will be granted up to 500%. It also said that the firm first allowed a union in 2018.
What We Think
It’s not surprising that staff want a share of the record profits that Samsung has made, but it would be surprising if Samsung awarded so much. (BR)
