What They Say
Last week we reported on an article that suggested that theatre and PPV streaming could co-exist (“Black Widow” Suggests that Streaming and Theaters Could Coexist). The Hollywood Reporter has since pointed out theatre owners were not happy because of a “stunning collapse in its second weekend in theatrical revenues”. There was also an “unprecedented” 41% drop in tickets from July 9th to 11th according to the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO).
Revenues for Black Widow dropped to #2 level last weekend at $26.3 million, down 67% one of the biggest drops ever for a Marvel title, and the worst among the Marvel Cinematic Universe films released by Disney.
Through Sunday, Black Widow’s global box office total was $264 million and more than $324 million including revenue from Disney+ Premier Access.
Disney said that revenues were $80 million at the box office, which it thinks was great, but NATO thinks otherwise, saying the stand-alone superhero offering should have debuted in the $92 million to $100 million range domestically
What We Think
This tends to highlight what I was talking about last week. Although there are movie fans that will go out to big event titles, there is less of a ‘long tail’ (or even a short one!) (BR)
