The Right to Repair Fight Comes to Congress

What They Say

A bill has been introduced in the US Congress as the Fair Repair Act.

“For too long, large corporations have hindered the progress of small business owners and everyday Americans by preventing them from the right to repair their own equipment,”

said Congressman Morelle.

“It’s long past time to level the playing field, which is why I’m so proud to introduce the Fair Repair Act and put the power back in the hands of consumers. This common-sense legislation will help make technology repairs more accessible and affordable for items from cell phones to laptops to farm equipment, finally giving individuals the autonomy they deserve.”

What We Think

I had a dig around mainstream US news sites to try to get a sense of the chances of this bill passing, but wasn’t very successful in finding much. We can be pretty sure that there will be plenty of back-room lobbying by high tech firms that don’t want the bill passed. This move follows on from a successful step for this kind of approach in New York. (New York Senate Passes Electronics Right-to-Repair Legislation) (BR)
