What They Say
A group from South Korean Hongik University have developed a concept based on opera glasses that are designed to provide magnification of what is on stage as well as information such as wayfinding and seat identification. The René glasses can be rented from the ticket office.
During a performance, the glasses can add background effects to the stage space, enhance the colours of the actors’ costumes, and visualize the actors’ singing and talking sounds. Sound uses bone conduction technology and can be optimised by the wearer.
What We Think
On the one hand, this look likes a useful device for show-goers, although I wonder if the experience loses some of its feel of a live event and is more akin to a cinema or TV presentation of a live event. I’m also not sure about the comfort issues. I attended a school drama event yesterday evening to support a family member yesterday and the uncomfortable chair didn’t add to the experience! (BR)
