The NPD Group: Consumer Spend on PC Gaming Hardware and Accessories in U.S. Increased 62% in 2020

What They Say

NPD said that US consumers spent $4.5 billion on hardware in 2020, up 62% on 2019 and more than double the level of 2017. Monitors were among the strongest growing, along with PC headsets and keyboards, both in units and values. 40% of US consumers played PC games in 2020, up 4% from 2019, and spent 14% more time playing.

Stephen Baker said:

“While we remain optimistic about the outlook for PC gaming hardware and accessories for the future, and expect the segments growth rate will exceed that of the total industry, we do not expect ongoing incremental dollar increases, but rather a plateauing of demand at these new elevated levels.”

What We Think

This is really in line with the data given out during the NPD CES presentations, particularly the Techfluence one (“Right Place, Right Product, Right Time, The Go-to Consumer Technology Products for the Pandemic.” ) (BR)
