What They Say
UBI Research of Korea, has said that it expects the share of the high end TV market taken by miniLED to go past the share taken by OLEDs by 2024. The firm, which has specialised in OLED research in the past, said that although sets in 2021 will have 1,000 to 3,000 dimming zones, it believes that more than 100K zones are needed to match the performance of OLED. However, it also said that if the miniLED backlight uses FR4 circuit boards or ‘BT’ (another kind of circuit board) and has 3,000 zones, then the TV manufacturing cost can be half that of OLED TV. That will mean that miniLED will win in cost performance, and cause the technology to overtake OLED.
What We Think
UBI has generally been a flag waver for OLED technology, so for the firm to see this shift is interesting. It was unclear at press time whether UBI was including QD-OLED in its forecast for OLED or whether it will break this out separately. BR)
