The 8K Monitor Talks to TVU Networks About Using 5G for 8K In China

What They Say

The 8K Association interviewed Jeff Wu, TVU Networks, Vice President of Solutions about the development of 5G in China and its use in delivering 8K content. Wu said that 8K is typically broadcast at 50-100Mbps using HEVC or VVC. When using the 6GHz range, multi-link data bonding is recommended. Moving to millimetre wave at mainly between 24.25GHz and 29.5GHz helps and can be combined with the sub-6GHz soectrum.

Wu said that there is discussion of using 5G for content contribution in higher than UltraHD. The high-end sports market is one area being planned, around the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

  • In Chengdu, in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, 1000 m² of 8K ultra-high-resolution screen is part of the country’s “100 Cities, 1,000 Screens” (100 cities with 1,000 large 8K screens) ultra-high-definition industrial project.
  • The 8K TV household plan in China encourages 300,000 people in 10 cities to upgrade from 4K channels to 8K UHD.

The project is mainly coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Radio and Television Administration, China Media Group, major operators, and various upstream and downstream 8K industry companies, TVU said.

What We Think

The “100 Cities, 1,000 Screens” project is an interesting one. It’s really in very large displays that 8K really shines. I was blown away by the immersiveness of the presentation by NHK and JVC using its 8K projectors and 22.3 sound some years ago at IBC. The immersive sound is harder with big LED displays, but is an important factor. (BR)
