What They Say
TFT Central got an update on AUO’s panel roadmap and suggested (behind a paywall) that there would be new 1080P TN/Film panel for gaming with 540Hz refresh and set for release in Q1 2023. Response time is quoted at “<3ms G2G” and also “2ms on/off”. It will support HDR1000 using a 96 zone backlight.
A new 27″ M270DAN10.0 panel with QuadHD and 360Hz is set for release in July 2022 and has HDR600 support. There will also be variants with a 576 zone miniLED backlight but will be released later. At the same time. a new M340QVR01.7 will be a 34″ 1000R panel with 3440 x 1440 res and 165Hz refresh (200Hz overclocked) with a 576 zone miniLED BLU, HDR1000 and 90% of DCI-P3.
AUO has a 32″ UltraHD panel on the list with 240Hz support and with 400 or 600 of output, but not until Q3 2023.
Among a range of other panels mentioned, there are two IPS panels with 2,000:1 contrast ratio (in the same range as LGD’s IPS Black). On is a 27″ QuadHD with 350 nits and 98% of P3 due in October and a 27″ UltraHD unit with 400 nits and due in Q1 2023.
What We Think
The improved contrast in IPS is interesting. I will follow up with AUO to find out if they will say more than LG Display. As it happens, I was recently looking through the Display Week symposium notes and noted a paper (34-6 D. Chen • Invited Paper – High Image Quality of 8K TV LCDs with Negative LC). It uses a negative LCD approach – i.e. zero drive voltage means white and claims to have developed an 8K display with 2,500:1 to 3,000:1. I wrote it up for the 8K Association here. (BR)
