Taking Connected TVs to Extremes

What Display Daily thinks: We are all gung ho on making TVs a central home hub with a lot more applications and capabilities, but the marketing that is coming out of companies like HiSense is a little over-the-top and seems more about hitting trending keywords than consumer value.

If you are going to rebuild consumers’ notions of what a TV is, today, you need to define an open platform that is not just about connecting your white goods and some ThinkQ-ish apps. This is a time for a bold vision and a reconfiguration of how TVs are sold and perceived by consumers.

Do better than just pandering to marketing hype or copying LG (or whoever came up with the idea that home appliances are about a “good life”). TVs need a vision that is more iPhone than Meta’s Portal.

HiSense Talks Up ConnectedLife at IFA 2023

At the recent IFA 2023, Hisense’s Fisher Yu, the President of Hisense Group Holdings, took center stage during a keynote presentation. His central theme revolved around The Scenario-Driven Future of Tech. His speech focused on Hisense’s forward-thinking approach, envisioning products that not only serve basic purposes but also fit seamlessly into the user’s life, enhancing their everyday experiences.

HiSense’s tech foundation hinges on three pillars: screens, their VIDAA OS, and the ConnectLife platform. Their vision involves expanding this triad, ensuring better user experience. We have seen this kind of presentation, which is becoming standard for consumer electronics companies. It paints a bold vision of a connected world, one into which you can easily slot AI, whatever it has to mean under the circumstances.

However, when it came to the actual final product, it was more of the same TV marketing push, with MiniLEDs, higher refresh rate, gaming-ready TVs, and an obligatory 8K showcase product:

  • U6K: Available in 55″ and 65″, prices start from $1265.
  • U7K: Comes with a 144Hz Game Mode Pro and Dolby Atmos audio. Sizes include 55″ up to a massive 100″, priced from $1518.
  • U8K: A MiniLED 144 Hz panel and a 2.1.2 multi-channel audio system. Available in 55″, 65″, and 75″, starting at $1645.
  • And there was also the obligatory promotion of a tie-up with a major sports brand, in this case, a third attempt at the UEFA European Football Championship.
