ITRI’s display group, the Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories (EOSRL) is working on micro-LED displays that could be used for large TV scale devices in conjunction with Macroblock, which develops LED drivers. EOSRL hopes to be making some units this quarter, with volume starting in 2018. Macroblock said at its annual LED industry event in July that it plans to be very involved in micro LED although it doesn’t expect real products to arrive until 2019.
Analyst Comment
Some Taiwanese sources have said that Mikro Mesa Technology, a micro LED start up that has a number of US patents for micro LED is also involved in the project. The company has been reported as being able to make LEDs of just 3µm square.
