Digitimes Research said that Q1 shipments of large LCDs from Taiwan (excluding Sharp) was down 3.4% but was up 51.5% to 72.25 million units with notebook panels down just 2.6% as Hannstar moved some smartphone panel production to notebooks.
Chinese makers hit 45% of the market globally in Q1 but Samsung Display was down as it moves towards QD-OLED production in Korea.
The firm thinks that Q2 will see strong demand, still with 3.5% growth over Q1 and 16.2% up on 2020. IT and TV panels are expected to be the main drivers. It also thinks that Taiwanese makers will try to move more capacity to notebook panels.
What We Think
Separately, AUO said that April revenue was done 3.6% from March, but up 46.8% year on year. Panel area was down 6.6% from March, so revenue per area increased.
Innolux said its revenue was down 2.1% on March and up 46.9% annually. Volume of large panels was down 10.6% million and small/medium panels were 6.4% down to 27.96 million. (BR)
