Swatch still plans to produce a smartwatch, says CEO Nick Hayek. At a recent shareholder meeting, Hayek said that the watch will be a connected device with remote-payment functionality. It will be launched in China and “one big country” (the WSJ implies that this could be China, which is Swatch’s largest market). The company has produced a smartwatch before (Swatch Outlines Plan for Smartwatches), but it was a niche device.
