According to a recent study by the European Audiovisual Observatory, around three-quarters of transactional video-on-demand releases occur in countries where the film has also been released in cinemas. The report can be downloaded here.

The research was designed to investigate whether or not there is a direct correlation between the release of films via pay-per-view or subscription VOD services and the same content being shown in local cinemas.

The study showed that 73% of films available via on-demand services were indeed released in cinemas. Conversely, only 1 in 7 transactional VOD releases occur in a country where the film hasn’t been shown beforehand.

The research was based on films released in EU cinemas between 2011 and 2015, with a minimum of 10,000 admissions.
