What They Say
Strategy Amalytics reported that Chromebooks hit their lowest market share for five years, dropping 67% in a year while the overall PC market dropped 7% compared to last year.
Chirag Upadhyay, Industry Analyst said
“ChromeOS shipments suffered as education demand continued to slow down and consumer upgrades for Chromebook were at the lowest point, even compared to pre-pandemic levels. The Chromebook business is very small but remains very important for top vendors, as they are keeping good inventory before education demand kicks off in Q2 2022 in main markets. Chromebook is still making an impact in new markets albeit slowly as the public sector look to spend towards cheaper devices for education.”
What We Think
This is a big, big hit to Chromebooks, but I suspect that it is a ‘blip’ because of the very high performance a year ago and because of the difficult times now. There are likely to be more tough quarters, but I feel sure that Chromebooks will come back with more volume in the future. The architecture and technology makes a lot of sense for education and other users that want a simple system. (BR)
