Spain bans retail digital signage after 10pm to save energy

What They Say

AVInteractive reports that the Spanish government has banned retail digital signage after 10.00pm to save energy. This, of course, is driven by the plan to reduce gas consumption after the Russian attack on Ukraine. The ban will also apply to lighting in shops and government offices. Among wider restrictions, air conditioning cannot be lowered below 27C in summer and heating cannot exceed 19C in winter.

The new measures will stay in place until November 2023 and German signage specialist Invidis has said that it expects similar regulations to be introduced elsewhere in Europe.

What We Think

The sensitivity to digital signage and large LEDs is very different in Europe. In Germany, there are already very restrictive regulations about the use of large signs. Spanish. Because of the ‘siesta’ culture, for a long time it has been the norm for shops to stay open until 9.00pm. (BR)
