We have been hearing rumours about a Sony web-TV service for almost two years (since Display Monitor Vol 20 No 2), and now the company has finally followed through. Playstation Vue will be a cloud-based service combining live, on-demand and three-day catch-up TV content. It includes a recommendation engine and a smart search feature. The service will initially launch in beta with around 75 channels per market, with partners including CBS, Fox and Viacom. The beta will run through November for PS3 and PS4 owners, starting in New York and rolling out to other US cities. It will also be available on the iPad shortly thereafter, as well as more Sony and non-Sony products. The commercial launch will take place next year. Pricing plans have not been announced yet; however, Sony did say that it will not be a contract service, but will allow monthly purchases.
