Sony to Remove YouTube From Some 2012 Products

Sony will be removing YouTube on 2012 Blu-ray players and cinema systems due to apparent problems caused by changes by Google. Last year, the YouTube app disappeared from 2012 Sony TVs and the time has now come for Blu-ray players and home cinema systems of the same generation to suffer the same fate. The app will cease functioning on 15th February 2017.

In April 2015, YouTube started transitioning from a Flash video player to a HTML5-based player, which affected many types of products, including Sony TVs. Back then, the YouTube app disappeared from Apple TV2 and Google TV as well as certain game consoles, Smart TVs and mobile devices..

Numerous apps have disappeared from Smart TVs and other internet-connected AV products over the last few years and Sony is not alone in this.

Sony stated that symptoms such as a black screen being displayed and disrupted video playback, when using the YouTube app on Sony’s 2012 audio and video products has been experienced by some people. It has apparently not been possible to solve the issue so Sony decided to take this action.
