Sony´s laser projectors brighten the prestigious Gaudí Centre of Reus

Three Sony VPL-FHZ55 3LCD laser projectors transport audiences to the Modernism period of Reus (Spain), focusing on the legacy left by local architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the Catalan city.

The Gaudí Centre of Reus was inaugurated in Antoni Gaudí’s hometown in 2005 to pay homage to the artist. At present, it is the only art centre dedicated to the life and work of the architecture genius.

The space is divided into three floors:

  • The ground floor focuses on introducing the Modernist heritage of Reus and key Modernism figure, Lluís Domènech i Montaner; and is where the Sony projectors are placed.
  • On the second floor, spectators can learn more about Gaudí and his work through devices, games and interactive solutions.
  • The top floor is dedicated to a multi?screen audio-visual show with sensory and tactile models.

Challenges

The Gaudí Centre required renovation of one of its three floors, in particular the ground floor, to modernize the former installation and to give the centre a new fresh look. The Centre was looking for a solution that would enable them to offer an immersive audio-visual experience for visitors, as well as greatly reducing maintenance costs associated with the replacement of lamps used in traditional projectors, while delivering a better and brighter picture quality than before.

Why Sony was selected

The Gaudí Centre wanted a flexible and stable AV solution that focused on picture quality, low installation costs and would offer lower maintenance costs of the previous projectors. The audio-visual integration company Sono chose Sony´s VPL-FHZ55 laser projectors because of the superior product performance and reliability.

The Sony solution

The Centre has 3 x laser projectors that are used for presentations around Modernism and the architectural legacy of Reus as well as the extensive work of his mastermind Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The VPL-FHZ55 was the world’s first 3LCD laser projector, offering up to 20,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free operation combined with stunning picture quality, low running costs and enduring brightness. The benefits for the Gaudí Centre are that they will not need to replace the light source of the projector for almost ten years in normal use, offering less hassle and ownership costs while also providing them with an innovative and reliable AV solution.

Results

Sono relied on Sony to provide the Gaudí Centre with an installation that could improve equipment performance and costs compared to former projectors. Thanks to the projector´s brightness and detailed WUXGA images at a higher resolution than Full HD, visitors of the Gaudí Centre can now enjoy an immersive experience from larger and brighter images.

“We have great confidence in the Sony 3LCD laser projectors. With the VPL-FHZ55, maintenance costs can be reduced while still offering high quality images to the audience” said Agustí Buscà, Project Manager at Sono.
