Sony reported its financial result for the third quarter of fiscal 2017 ended December 31, 2017. Sales and operating revenues were ¥2,672 billion ($23.65 billion) compared to ¥2,398 billion in the same period previous year. Sony said 11.5% year-over-year sales growth was due to significant increases in G&NS, HE&S and Financial Services segment sales. Net income was ¥295.9 billion ($2.6 billion) compared to ¥19.6 billion reported last year.
Sales growth in Game & Network Services (G&NS) was 16% primarily due to an increase in PS4 software sales. Home Entertainment & Sound (HE&S) sales growth was 21.6%, primarily due to a shift to high value-added models, primarily 4K televisions. Mobile Communications (MC) saw a sales decline of 13%, primarily due to a decrease in smartphone unit sales.
