Sony PlayStation moves further away from video

What They Say

Sony has said that from the end of August, the PlayStation Store will no longer offer film and TV purchases and rentals, taking PlayStation out of the TVOD market. Fierce Video pointed out that it is a year since the Vue multichannel video programming distribution brand, Vue, was shut down by Sony.

What We Think

For a long time, I talked about PlayStation as Sony’s ‘trojan horse’ that got an STB into the living room, paid for by the game player. I did start to use it for OTT video watching for a while, but my old PS3 took a while to boot and in the end I switched to other methods. It turns out that gaming has grown so much, the prize of video is clearly less important. Sales must be relatively low as I would have thought that the marginal cost to add video to the store was fairly low. (BR)
