Sony unveiled two new laser projectors and their lamp-based counterparts – continuing the company’s strategy of producing two versions of all of its installation models. The intent is to provide a lower-cost alternative to laser.
The new laser projectors themselves – the VPL-FWZ65 and VPL-FWZ60 – already cost less than Sony’s previous generation, as they have 1280 x 800 resolution. Previous laser models were 1920 x 1200. Again, this has been done to make laser technology more accessible to Sony’s customers.
Brightness is 6,000 lumens on the FWZ65 and 5,000 lumens on the FWZ60. Both are 3LCD models, as are the lamp-based VPL-FW65 and VPL-FW60 (6,300 and 5,200 lumens, respectively). All four will be released in April.
A dome projection dominated Sony’s stand, using just two projectors: the VPL-GTZ270. Like other ‘Z’ models, this is a laser unit, and was released in mid-2015.
There was little other display news on the stand, although Sony did highlight a new touchscreen partner named PresTop, which will provide touch solutions for the Bravia professional displays. Sony’s previous partner was uTouch, but we heard that there had been a pricing dispute. PresTop was announced as Sony’s new partner shortly before ISE. New Bravia displays using PresTop touch will be released in April.
