Sony Announces New Home Cinema Projector at IFA 2016

Sony has enhanced its Home Cinema line-up with the addition of a new, compact native 4K Home Cinema projector launched at IFA 2016. The VPL-VW550ES is the third model in Sony’s existing portfolio to support 4K HDR, making it the ideal home cinema or living room theatre solution for cinema, music and sporting event fans who want to watch the content they love with the most spectacular image quality.

As demand for 4K HDR content continues to grow the VPL-VW550ES is future-proofed for the latest 4K standards, as well as compatible with HDR to get the very best out of today’s content.

“The VPL-VW550ES is another example of Sony’s commitment to bringing the most true to reality images and immersive experience to our customers”, said Thomas Issa, Product Manager at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “4K HDR imagery is the closest representation of the reality our eyes see and home cinema fans will now be able to enjoy the very best picture quality on the new projector in a way they never have before. With 4K HDR, seeing truly is believing.”

The VPL-VW550ES is the third Home Cinema projector released by Sony since IFA 2015, after updating its popular HW series with new VPL-HW45ES and its top of the line VPL-VW5000ES model.

Designed to suit your environment

Sony has designed the VPL-VW550ES to be ‘unseen’ and ‘unheard’. Due to growing demand from Sony customers, the sleek and compact VPL-VW550ES is available in Premium White or Black to perfectly blend in with any home cinema or living room theatre environment. And thanks to its low fan noise entertainment lovers can view their favourite programmes undisturbed. Viewers can also expect fewer interruptions and reduced maintenance thanks to Sony’s long-lasting lamp technology, which provides an impressive 6,000 hours of operation (in Low Mode).

Breathtaking picture quality

The VPL-VW550ES, will replace the VPL-VW520ES, providing a better picture quality than its predecessor. It comes with an impressive 1,800 lumens brightness, an improved dynamic contrast ratio of 350,000:1 and Sony’s unique 4K technology for clearer and sharper pictures than other existing technologies. HDR offers extremely wide contrast with an even higher range of brightness levels and can reproduce both bright and dark tones to deliver images that match the director’s intentions and vision.

In addition to the compatibility with HDR used for Ultra HD Blu-ray and Over-The-Top content (OTT) services, Sony’s new Home Cinema projector will be compatible with Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) – used for future broadcasting services and user generated contents – through a firmware update*. By offering more realistic and stunning images for sports, live music and other TV programs, this will make the VPL-VW550ES fully prepared for the future.

Much like its predecessor, the new model continues to offer viewers access to the latest 4K content services through the latest HDMI standard (HDR capability both for 4K 24p and 4K 60p) and HDCP 2.2 connectivity for both HDMI1 and HDMI2 terminals. A built-in RF 3D transmitter makes it easy to provide further adaptability with a strong wireless signal for wider coverage and 3D synchronisation stability.

The VPL-VW550ES will begin shipping in October 2016 across Europe. IFA visitors can get a first look at the VPL-VW550ES at IFA Sony Booth – Hall 20 Messe Berlin. For more information on Sony’s Home Cinema portfolio, please visit: http://pro.sony.eu/products/projectors-homecinema
