Sony has acquired Softkinetic Systems, a Belgian software company. Softkinetic’s DepthSense range includes sensors, cameras, modules and other products covering gesture tracking, contextual awareness and 3D data acquisition.
Sony’s purchase of the company is part of the push to develop range image sensors, as well as to integrate gesture recognition into its products. As well as DepthSense, Softkinetic is the developer of the time-of-flight (ToF) range image sensor technology – and related systems and software – which is a method of resolving distance to an object, using the flight time of light.
There will be no material impact on Sony’s consolidated financial results for the current fiscal year (ending 31st March 2016).
