Socionext Decodes 8k

Socionext has introduced a single-chip SoC that can process decoding of 8k HEVC video. The SCH801A was developed with Japan’s NHK, and has successfully decoded 8k test streaming data. Existing digital TV SoCs will be able to be used with the SCH801A to quickly develop 8k TV sets, says Socionext.

The SoC is compliant with the ARIB STD-B32 Part I Japanese broadcasting standard, for HEVC encoding of 8k satellite video. It can also decode 8k at 60fps at one channel with a single chip. The SoC has one lane of PCIe Gen 2 and four channels of HDMI 2.0 transceivers as external interfaces.

The chip will be on show at NAB (South Hall Upper Level, stand SU13913). Volume shipments are scheduled to start in November.
