Smartphone Display Shipments rise to 422 million in Q320 according to Omdia

What They Say

Omdia said that 422 million smatphone displays were shipped in Q3 2020, down from 432 million in 2019, but up 16% on Q2. The main reason was the recovery of production capacity, but Huawei also boosted its buying before the US government sanctions set in.

5G growth helped the growth of flexible OLEDs which are forecast to reach 171 million for the year, representing 8% YoY growth. Rigid OLEDs are 301 million.

What We Think

Not sure what is going on at Omdia. It’s disappointing to see typos (like the one in the chart) and we didn’t report the LCD numbers in the release as it was clearly wrong. We suspect that the report of 1.08 million for the year should be 1.08 billion. It’s an easy mistake to make, but it’s a hard mistake to make if you have awareness of the market (I know I’m tempting fate here 🙂 ) (BR)
