SK IE Technology to supply PI film for HP’s foldable OLED notebook

What They Say

The Elec reported that SK IE Technology is to supply polyimide film for a foldable notebook that HP is said to be developing, based on a 17″ 3840 x 2160 when open, 11″ when folded. (Ya Gotta Know When to Fold ‘Em) The website reports that LG Display is planning to make 10K of the displays starting in Q3 for use in HP devices. The Elec said that the firm will be the exclusive supplier of the films and had won the order by offering them at half the price of rival bids.

What We Think

Half price would be compelling, no doubt. However, most folding smartphones are using ultra-thin glass and it remains to be seen whether polyimide will be robust enough to establish itself in the notebook market. (BR)
